Why cost of ownership matters
The purchase price is only the beginning. Fuel or electricity, insurance, road tax, the roadworthiness test (NCT in Ireland, MOT in the UK), servicing, tyres, repairs and depreciation together usually cost more than the car itself over a few years. Use this tool to see the full picture before you buy.
How to use this calculator
Enter realistic figures for your situation — what you actually pay for insurance, what you expect to drive in a year — and the tool breaks the total down into monthly, weekly, yearly and per-distance costs. Adjust any figure and the results update instantly.
Frequently asked questions
How is the cost of a trip calculated?
Distance, consumption and fuel or energy price — the tool returns the one-way and return cost in your local currency, plus the cost per person if you share the journey.
Does it work for electric cars?
Yes. Enter consumption in kWh per 100 km and your electricity price, and the trip cost is calculated from energy instead of fuel.
Can I compare two cars for the same trip?
Enter the trip for one car, note the total, then change the consumption or price and run it again — or use Car Comparison for a side-by-side figure.
What does it leave out?
Wear, road tax, the roadworthiness test (NCT in Ireland, MOT in the UK) and insurance are not part of a single trip, so this tool covers fuel or energy only. Those costs belong in the Car Cost Calculator for your country.
