Belgium has three regions, three tax systems and three sets of car costs — which is why two neighbours with the same car can pay noticeably different amounts each year. This guide sets out the real 2026 numbers for fuel, road tax, the technical inspection, insurance and depreciation.
Everything below uses verified Belgian figures: European Commission fuel prices, Eurostat household electricity prices and the official 2026 keuring tariff. Where a cost genuinely varies by region or insurer, we say so instead of inventing an average.
Fuel: what Belgian drivers pay in 2026
Belgium's fuel prices sit close to the EU average — noticeably cheaper than the Netherlands next door, notably pricier than Luxembourg, which is why border-fuelling is a Belgian tradition.
| Fuel | Price (Sep 2026) | 50-litre tank |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol (E95) | €1.885 per litre | about €94 |
| Diesel | €2.208 per litre | about €110 |
| EU average petrol | €1.840 per litre | about €92 |
Prices are national averages including all taxes, from the European Commission's weekly Oil Bulletin (week of 31 August 2026). Your local station will differ.
Annual road tax: verkeersbelasting
The verkeersbelasting (rijtaks, taxe de circulation) is annual and regional: Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels each set their own tariffs. It is calculated on fiscal horsepower, and for vehicles registered after 2016 it is modulated by CO₂ emissions, fuel type and Euro standard — the so-called 'green' calculation.
A normal mid-size petrol car (think a Golf 1.5 TSI at 8 fiscal hp) lands around €260–€280 a year depending on region. Fully electric cars are exempt from the annual tax in Flanders and Brussels; diesel engines carry a surcharge.
Because regional tariffs are indexed every 1 July, always check the current rate for your region and your car's fiscal hp before budgeting.
The technical inspection: keuring / contrôle technique
Cars in Belgium must pass a periodic technical inspection. The 2026 tariff for a standard periodic check is about €40.90 for the base inspection, plus an environmental test — roughly €46 in total for a petrol car in Flanders or Brussels, and more for diesel (around €56–€60) because of the emissions test.
A used-car inspection ('tweedehandskeuring') costs more, around €74, and a re-inspection after a failure is a smaller fee on top. Budget for repairs after a failure: worn tyres, brakes or suspension are the common culprits.
Electricity, if you drive electric or plug-in hybrid
Belgian household electricity averaged €0.35 per kWh in the second half of 2025 including taxes and levies, among the higher rates in the EU. Charging a 60 kWh EV from empty to full therefore costs roughly €21 at home, and more at public chargers.
Per kilometre, that is still usually cheaper than petrol — but the gap is smaller in Belgium than in countries with cheaper electricity, and it shrinks further if you rely on fast public charging.
Insurance, maintenance and the number nobody counts: depreciation
Insurance is the most personal line in the budget: your age, history, postcode and the car's insurance group move the premium more than anything else. Rather than quote a fake national average, use your own renewal figure — that is what the calculator is for.
Servicing, tyres and repairs on a car over five years old typically run to several hundred euros a year, and a full set of tyres alone is a significant single hit. But the biggest cost remains depreciation: a new car commonly loses 15–25% of its value in year one and around half over five years.
On a €30,000 car, five-year depreciation of roughly €15,000 is often more than all the fuel, tax, inspection and servicing costs combined.
Rough all-in figures for Belgium
Put your own figures in — your premium, your mileage, your car's fiscal hp — and the total becomes real rather than generic.
- Fuel: €90–€130 per tank equivalent, or several hundred to well over €1,000 a year depending on mileage.
- Annual road tax: roughly €260–€280 for a typical mid-size petrol car (region-dependent).
- Inspection: about €46 every year for petrol once the car is out of its first exemption period.
- Depreciation: the largest single line for any car bought new.

Frequently asked questions
How much is road tax in Belgium in 2026?
The annual verkeersbelasting is regional and depends on fiscal horsepower, plus CO₂ modulation for cars registered since 2016. A typical mid-size petrol car costs roughly €260–€280 a year depending on region. Electric cars are exempt in Flanders and Brussels.
How much does the Belgian car inspection cost?
In 2026 a standard periodic inspection is about €40.90 plus the environmental test, so roughly €46 for a petrol car in Flanders or Brussels. Diesel is higher (about €56–€60) and a used-car inspection around €74.
Why do Belgian car costs differ by region?
Vehicle taxes were regionalised: Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels each set their own annual tariffs and indexing rules. Fuel prices, insurance and inspection fees are broadly national, but the road tax line changes with your region.
Is an electric car cheaper to run in Belgium?
Usually yes on energy and road tax — electricity averages €0.35/kWh and EVs are exempt from the annual tax in Flanders and Brussels. But higher purchase prices mean depreciation usually decides the winner over five years.
